OpenOrigins has raised $4.5 million in a seed funding round led by Galaxy Interactive to expand its operations globally. OpenOrigins utilizes blockchain technology to verify the authenticity of digital content, addressing the challenges posed by deepfake media. The company's software allows newsrooms to authenticate photos and videos in real time and retrospectively, recording all data on the Hyperledger blockchain.

The startup’s CEO, Manny Ahmed, shifted his focus from developing deepfake detection tools to creating infrastructure that proves content is human-made. OpenOrigins collaborates with media production company ITN and plans to expand into the United States and India, along with launching a marketplace for newsrooms to license their verified data for AI training.

In addition to its applications in journalism, OpenOrigins’ technology can help prevent insurance fraud and verify dating app profiles. While other companies, like Verify, focus on certifying digital content, Ahmed emphasizes that OpenOrigins uniquely addresses both real-time and historical content authentication. The new funding will be used to enhance the commercial team and expand their presence in the U.S. market.
